Five cruise ships are expected to dock in Chania by Saturday, confirming the momentum recorded by maritime tourism in Crete. This event is not an isolated incident, but is part of a broader context of impressive growth, as 2025 is set to be a record year for Souda, with 201 cruise ship arrivals from April to December.
Against the backdrop of the arrival of the impressive Marella Discovery 2 with 1,841 passengers on Easter Monday, Chania is once again welcoming thousands of visitors by sea, as the tourist port of Souda prepares for one of the busiest summers in its history, with a peak in September (34 arrivals) and high mobility in June, July and August (29 arrivals per month).
In the meantime, it should be emphasized that Souda and Greece in general are approached by luxury cruise ships such as the Disney Fantasy, the Sun Princess, and the Ritz-Carlton mega yachts, thus giving prestige and economic momentum to our destination.
The cruise in Chania may not be just an ephemeral image of a tourist boom, but a strategic advantage for the local community, the market, and the global promotion of Crete. However, it must also have the corresponding support of local bodies. For example, the historic market of Chania remains closed for another year, with the economic bodies of the island speaking of a long delay that does not contribute to the promotion of the destination internationally.
This market, in its operation, was the ultimate destination for cruise visitors to Chania, with what this implies for the promotion of the destination. Everyone’s wish is that 26 will be the year of its reopening after a long period of maintenance and modernization.
