Update: Ferries sail tomorrow, new seamen's strike on Feb. 4-5

The Executive Committee of the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) called for the temporary suspension of their strike action today but announced a new 48-hour strike for next Thursday and Friday 4 and February 5.

Cpnsequently, ferries will depart regularly from tomorrow after 6 am for all destinations while passengers are strongly advised to contact the local port authorities and travel agencies for any changes to routes.

Ferries have been docked at Greek ports since last Wednesday as sailors kicked off their second 48-hour strike this week, adding to a groundswell of public discontent over plans to reform the country’s struggling pension system.

The Greek Seamen’s Federation (PNO) had declared a 48h strike in all ship categories starting from 06:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Sunday 31 January.

Ships involved in the transfer of migrants and refugees were not excluded from the mobilisation.

PNO in an announcement demands the withdrawal of the draft law on social security noting that due to the special character of the seamen’s profession their fund can’t been incorporated in the new single national social security fund.
