Holidaymakers’ exodus from Greece’s urban centres peaked on Monday ahead of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important religious holidays in the country, celebrated on August 15.
On Monday 21 ferries set sail from Piraeus while another 16 departed from Rafina and 5 from the port of Lavrio. On Tuesday 15 August, 20 ferries depart from Piraeus, 12 from Rafina and 6 from Lavrio.
27, 822 passengers left on Sunday from the port of Piraeus, 7,969 from Rafina and 1,597 from Lavrio for the Aegean islands, announced the port authorities.
Furthmore, 7,488 persons left for the islands of the Argosaronic Gulf.
The national meteo service noted that strong winds, reaching 6 on the Beaufort scale, will blow over the islands on Monday that will gradually fade during the night.
