Corfu and Igoumenitsa ships will stay docked at least until Saturday morning, following a decision by seamen of Corfu to extend their strike another 48 hours, they said on Wednesday.
In comments to the Athens News Agency (ANA), the president of the “Agios Spyridon” Corfu Seamen’s Union Christos Vitouladitis noted that following numerous meetings with the four shipowners of Corfu, one of them does not agree with the union’s demands, therefore the strike will continue.
The workers’ chief demand is that closed-type ferries continue to sail during the winter, because “the open-type ferries do not cover the needs of passengers, whose number has increased” and do not provide cover from adverse weather conditions in the winter, Vitouladitis told ANA.
Unless the strike is extended, it will last until at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday.
