Shipping Minister: Disability friendly ferries in Greece from 2019

Greek Shipping and Island Policy Minister Fotis Kouvelis announced that passenger vessels will need to become disability friendly from next year.

Kouvelis noted that shipping companies must make their vessels accessible and safe for people with motor disabilities by May 1, 2019, according to a memorandum signed on Wednesday.

The decision obliges shipping companies to install proper elevators and lifting devices, designate specific spaces for parking of cars disabled people are travelling with or being dropped off from, areas where their wheelchairs can be secured, and specially trained personnel to help them once on board.

The Minister’s announcement comes after his meeting last month with the national association of Greeks with paraplegia.
