Exodus for Greek Orthodox Easter reaches its apex at ports on Holy Saturday

The exodus of Athenians heading for the Aegean Islands over the Orthodox Easter weekend reached a peak at ports on Holy Saturday, authorities reported, according to ANA.

Saturday schedules include a total of 6 sailings from the main Greek port of Piraeus, 10 from Rafina, and 6 from Lavrio on the east Attica coast.

On Orthodox Good Friday, 14 ships left Piraeus, including 13,177 passengers, 2,040 private cars, 474 trucks, and 432 motorbikes.

For the nearby Argosaronic Islands, there were 32 sailings, including 9,047 passengers, 1,279 cars, 9 trucks, and 253 motorbikes.

Rafina also saw heavy traffic on Friday, with 13 sailings and 7,776 passengers, 1,837 cars, 27 trucks, and 166 motorbikes, while Lavrio saw 9 sailings, with 2,785 passengers, 739 cars, 9 trucks, and 45 motorbikes.

In terms of vehicles, the heaviest traffic was reported on Friday on the Athens-Corinth national highway, with delays and a 500-meter tailback at the Elefsina toll plaza, while the Athens-Lamia highway was busy but with a steady flow of traffic. There was also heavy traffic from the Elefsina tolls up until Megara and Kinetta.
