Traffic restrictions in central Athens, in an area known as the ‘daktylios (ring)’, resumed on Monday, September 30 and will last until July 17, 2020, the Greek traffic police announced on Monday, ANA reports.
Cars will only be able to enter central Athens on alternate days based on the odd-even system, where cars with odd number plates are permitted access when the date is odd and cars with even number plates when the date is even. The restrictions do not apply to ‘green-technology’ cars (electric or gas-fuelled and those emitting less than 140g CO2 per kilometer) and those with special permits.
Also coming into force on the same date is the larger ‘green’ daktylios, which restricts the entry of trucks over 2.2 tonnes and coaches first registered prior to 1996 (until the end of 2019) and 1997 (until the end of 2020). This zone covers a larger area of Athens, including most parts of the inner suburbs and the southern coast, with the exception of the Athens-Lamia national highway, Kifissos Avenue and Athinon Avenue.
The measures apply from 7:00-20:00 on Monday to Thursday and 7:00-15:00 on Friday. They do not apply at weekends, public holidays and days when all public transport is on strike.
