A positive opinion for the operation of a tourist train in the city of Kalamata was provided by the Municipal Committee of the Municipality of Kalamata, proposing the relevant decision to the Municipal Council. The initiative concerns the operation of a new attractive means of transport that will be integrated into the city’s tourist planning, with the aim of enhancing the tourist experience and promoting its cultural and historical sites.
According to the introductory note of the Municipality’s Technical Services Directorate, the opinion concerns three special routes, of which the first two, the main and the alternative, are approved, while the summer route is referred for review. The starting point of the train is set at Frantzi Street, on the condition that it is properly marked and used only during its operation, so that the rest of the year it remains available for parking other vehicles. At the same time, the Municipality will issue relevant certificates for the passability of the roads, the total length of the routes and the precise determination of the starting point.
The main route, approximately 2.7 kilometers long, starts from Krontiris Street and passes through central and historical points of Kalamata, such as Nikitaras, Anagnostaras, 23rd March Square, Ypapantis, Farios and Aristomenous, ending again in Krontiris. Two stops are planned, in Ypapantis and in Frantzi opposite the Railway Station, in order to facilitate visitors’ access to the main tourist points of the center.
The alternative route, also approximately 2.7 kilometers long, starts from the same point and follows a slightly different route through Aristomenous, Frantzis, Giatrakou, Kilkis and Artemidos streets, passing through the same key junctions of the city and ending again in Krontiris.
The summer route, 6.5 kilometers long, is proposed to start from Akrita street, cross Navarinou and return via Megalos Alexandros and Koronis, thus connecting the coastal front with the urban unit. It includes stops near the Church of the Resurrection, in order to serve visitors and residents who wish to enjoy the route with a view of the sea.
The operation of the tourist train is expected to significantly enhance Kalamata’s tourism product, offering an alternative tour experience to visitors and contributing to the further promotion of its historical and coastal character.
