Mykonos: Smart Crosswalks to Enhance Road Safety

Mykonos, as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, presents increased risk on its road network, especially during the summer season.

The main reasons are that in the summer, the island’s population multiplies with thousands of visitors from all over the world. The narrow streets of Chora and the main roads of the island are under enormous pressure due to increased traffic. On the streets of Mykonos, hundreds of tourists move on foot, crossing the roads carelessly due to overcrowding or the absence of clear signage.

In this context, the Municipality of Mykonos is proceeding with the tender procedures for the supply of smart crossings to enhance road safety.

In particular, smart crossings with photovoltaic panels will operate on solar energy and will include functions such as illuminated LED markings, illuminated pavement reflectors, audible notification, etc., and will be visible even at night when a pedestrian is preparing to cross the road. With these functions, drivers are notified in time of the presence of pedestrians, making them more careful. In addition, metal bollards will be added in some places in order to prevent vehicles from parking near the crossing but also to create a protective boundary for pedestrians who are about to cross the crossing.

In detail, the installation of smart crossings with photovoltaic panels is planned in 6 points. At the same time, 7 bollards will be placed in 2 points, with the aim of preventing possible future accidents.

In detail, the smart crossing will consist of 4 posts, which will have a pedestrian detection system, 2 special pedestrian crossing signs with LED lights, multiple wireless inset pavement reflectors, 2 touch systems that will activate the crossing manually, 2 detection lights that will be activated when pedestrians are detected during the night and will operate with a photocell, 1 cloud control system of the crossing and 2 photovoltaic panels that will make the operation of the crossing autonomous. The way to activate the smart crossing system will be either with the automatic detection system, or with the touch system that will flash to warn pedestrians to manually activate the device.
