A landmark project for Southern Crete is now taking shape as the contract was signed between the Port Fund of Chania Prefecture and the contractor for the construction of the new passenger-ferry ship service ramp (E/G-O/G) in Agia Roumeli, Municipality of Sfakia, with a total budget of 816,982.36 euros (plus VAT).
The project, which has been a long-standing request of the residents and professionals of the area for decades, is expected to be completed within nine months, with a delivery deadline of February 2, 2026. The funding comes from the Sectoral Program of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy and the Recovery Fund, highlighting the strategic importance of the intervention.
Catalyst for tourism and the local economy
Agia Roumeli, the exit gate of the Samaria Gorge and a reference point for thousands of visitors each year, until now did not have adequate mooring infrastructure for large passenger ships, which significantly limited the possibilities of movement and hindered the development of tourism.
With the construction of the new ramp, the sea accessibility in the area is significantly improved, facilitating the connection of Agia Roumeli with Loutro, Sougia, Chora Sfakion, and other coastal points of South Crete. At the same time, the visitor experience is upgraded and new prospects are opened for the extension of the tourist season and the strengthening of local entrepreneurship.
As a representative of the Port Fund noted, “this is a crucial infrastructure that will change the map of travel on the southern coastline of Chania and will substantially contribute to the balanced development of the Municipality of Sfakia.”
